Te Whāriki ā Toi is the e-learning site for the Bay of Plenty District Health Board, a crown entity of the New Zealand Government.   The district health board funds and delivers health care to over 238,000 people in an area of 9,666 square kilometres.   It employs just over 3,000 people and has hospitals in Tauranga and Whakatane.

Te Whāriki ā Toi translates to “The Woven Mat of Toi Rākau”.    Mats are a well- known image for the weaving of knowledge and education, particular mats had special functions and some were seating in places of learning.   Toi is a common ancestor to all iwi (tribes) in the Bay of Plenty and “toi” is also a word for summit, so gives an idea of the peak of achievement.

The site delivers  elearning for all employees of the Bay of Plenty District Health Board and contracted primary health care providers.   A mix of mandatory, role required and optional professional development courses all attract professional development hours.   Te Whāriki ā Toi also provides access to eportfolios, using the Mahara platform.
